Chris Foster discusses Kevin Prince and UCLA football

Times UCLA reporter Chris Foster about Kevin Prince leading UCLA's resurgence, and if Saturday's game at Utah is a trap.

As Baxter Holmes wrote earlier this week:

"More than a month before Thanksgiving, UCLA's goose already looked cooked. Arizona's football team, with a five-game losing streak and an interim coach, roasted the Bruins by 36 points in Tucson on Oct. 20.

"The embarrassing loss prompted calls for Coach Rick Neuheisel's ouster, but UCLA responded with consecutive victories over California and nationally ranked Arizona State to pull into a first-place tie in the Pacific 12 Conference's South Division.

"Now the future suddenly looks bright with possibility. The only roadblocks between UCLA and a Nov. 26 showdown at USC with a berth in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game at stake are the conference's newcomers, Utah and Colorado.

"The Bruins travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utes on Saturday, then play host to Colorado on Nov. 19.

"Both teams have struggled in their inaugural Pac-12 seasons but Utah, liked UCLA, has reversed field by winning its last two games.

"It took far longer to get our first Pac-12 win that we had hoped it would, but we finally got it," Coach Kyle Whittingham said after Utah's 27-8 win against Oregon State on Oct. 29. The Utes improved to 5-4 overall, 2-4 in conference play by defeating Arizona, 34-21, on Saturday."

UCLA won its Pacific 12 Conference opener Saturday, holding off Oregon State when Sheldon Price knocked away a late fourth-down pass by the Beavers at the Bruins' 22-yard line.

The Bruins (2-2 overall) survived despite a blocked field-goal attempt, a blocked point-after try and a UCLA punt that was returned 85 yards for a touchdown by Jordan Poyer.

"It was a great win on the road. That's what you have to do in this conference," UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said afterward in a television interview.

Asked if the win might have also made the hot seat he's on "a little more tepid," the coach said, "I'm just trying to stay standing. That's it."

UCLA was able to control the ball, rushing for 211 yards in 49 carries. Derrick Coleman led the way, running for 100 yards in 20 carries.

Oregon State (0-3) managed only 88 yards rushing in 29 carries, though freshman quarterback Sean Mannion completed 24 of 40 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

UCLA's Richard Brehaut passed only 11 times, completing seven for 146 yards and a touchdown.

UCLA football: Houston defeats Bruins, 38-34

Ucla2_600

Quarterback Kevin Prince has a concussion, but UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel might have the bigger headache after Houston held on for a 38-34 win over the Bruins on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Stadium in Houston.

UCLA's defense simply couldn't contain Cougars quarterback Case Keenum, who might own a couple of NCAA career records when he's finished this season. In the season opener for both teams, he showed why, completing 30 of 40 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 30 yards.

Prince, UCLA's starting quarterback, completed his first three passes, but sustained a game-ending concussion when he was upended on a play in the second quarter.

Backup Richard Brehaut came on to complete 17 of 26 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 87 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries.

Offense wasn't the problem for the Bruins. Johnathan Franklin ran for 128 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries and UCLA outgained Houston, 554 yards to 469.

Tight end Joseph Fauria, a 6-foot-8 transfer from Notre Dame, led UCLA receivers with six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Brehaut connected with Anthony Barr on an 11-yard scoring pass with 1 minute 19 seconds left in the game, but Kip Smith's extra point was blocked and Houston easily recovered an onside kick.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER RECAP:

Houston 38, UCLA 28 (fourth quarter)

Houston refuses to fold. The Cougars, leading by three, get a defensive stop. Quarterback Case Keenum puts the ball in the end zone again, although it required a kind bounce.

Keenum completed a jail-break screen to Tyrone Carrier, who had the ball knocked loose at the one-yard line. Center Chris Thompson recovered the fumble in the end zone for the touchdown.

Houston 31, UCLA 28 (late third quarter)

The Cougars were on the verge of upping their lead when running back Bryce Bell fumbled on the UCLA five-yard line. The Bruins went 95 yards in nine plays.

UCLA’s first opportunity with the ball resulted in a fumble on a kickoff return, which the Bruins recovered. They held the ball for three plays, with a bad snap by center Kai Maiava killing any chance of moving the ball.

Houston, meanwhile, was efficient, driving 60 yards to get a 35-yard field goal by Matt Hogan for a 10-0 lead. Quarterback Case Keenum completed seven of seven pass for 52 yards on the drive.

Houston made it look easy on its first drive, going 80 yards in 16 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Michael Hayes went the final yard for the touchdown, but it was quarterback Case Keenum’s moment.

Keenum, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against UCLA last season, completed five of seven passes for 42 yards. He also ran twice for 18 yards. He completed an eight-yard pass to Hayes on a third-and-seven play. Keenum also scrambled 10 yards on a third down to give the Cougars a first down on the UCLA seven-yard line.

UCLA football: Guard Chris Ward leaves practice with ankle injury

UCLAUCLA’s bad luck on the offensive line may have struck again, as guard Chris Ward was charted off the field with an ankle injury Tuesday.

“I was told it was probably just a sprain,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “I don’t think it’s that serious. We've got our fingers crossed that he will be back shortly.”

Ward was scheduled to undergo X-rays as a precaution, Neuheisel said.

The Bruins' depth on the offensive line is minimal; at least until tackle/guard Jeff Baca finishes rehabilitation from a broken ankle suffered during spring practice. He is expected back in mid-September.

Ward was playing with the second team during a two-minute drill when he rolled the ankle. He was helped off the field for treatment before being removed to the training room.

Ward and Albert Cid had been alternating at guard with the first team. Greg Capella was the other guard on the first team.

Offensive line coach Bob Palcic said he had options on the line if Ward was out for any length of time. That could include moving Sean Sheller from tackle to guard and playing Brett Downey at tackle.

In other injury news, wide receiver Taylor Embree will undergo an MRI on his right calf Tuesday. Embree has been told by doctors that he probably has a strained calf muscle.

UCLA makes offer to Combs, son of rapper and producer

UCLA UCLA has offered a scholarship to Justin Combs, a cornerback from New Rochelle (N.Y.) Iona Prep, according to Rivals.com. This may mean the college football rapper monopoly in Los Angeles is over.

USC has long been supported by Snoop Dogg, a regular on the sidelines at games in the past. But Combs balances things as the son of rapper and music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Of course, this is just what the rivalry needs, an East Coast-West Coast rapper divide.

Add it to the list, which includes a grand Hollywood debate on who is better.

The Oscar winners: Tim Robbins (UCLA) or Forest Whitaker (USC)?

The Trekkies: George Takei (UCLA) in the original “Star Trek” or LeVar Burton (USC) in the next generation?

The funny guys: Ben Stiller (UCLA) or Will Ferrell (USC)?

The basketball-players-turned-actors: Mike Warren (UCLA) or Tom Selleck (USC)?

UCLA football: Quarterback Brett Hundley closer to practicing

Brett-hundley_600

The words that UCLA fans have been wanting to hear were shouted by Coach Rick Neuheisel on Monday, “Taylor Embree, get over here and catch some passes from Brett Hundley.”

Hundley, the eagerly anticipated freshman quarterback, threw on the field Saturday morning for the first time since having knee surgery.

“That first pass felt weird,” Hundley said. “But the knee feels great. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to get in there next week.”

The plan is to have a package of plays for Hundley so he could be spotted into games this season, much as Ohio State did with Terrelle Pryor when he was a freshman.

That remains an option, depending on how quickly Hundley can get up to speed.

“Brett is chomping at the bit,” Neuheisel said. “He’s ticked off that he can’t play. I think they had him on the treadmill today. Hopefully, we’ll have him doing stuff next week. The key now is to get his arm back in shape.”

 Sack-a-lot?

The two highlight moments of the morning practice both involved quarterback Richard Brehaut, though he was the punch line on one.

After holding onto the ball too long on a pass play, Neuheisel had Brehaut lay on the ground and said, “Come drag him off, ‘throw out your dead. Throw out your dead!’ ”

Bad audible. The line from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is “Bring out your dead.” But the point was made.

Brehaut, moments later, flicked the best pass of camp, with the ball traveling about 65 yards in the air into Devin Lucien’s hands.

James gang

In two days, Jordon James has put some oomph into the F-back spot.

The team’s only two F-backs, Anthony Barr and Damien Thigpen, are out with hamstring injuries, resulting in James being moved from running back.

“I like the position,” James said. “It gets me in the open field to make plays.”

James was elusive as a runner and also made a handful of receptions Saturday. UCLA F-backs caught only 18 passes last season. James caught four in 11-on-11 drills Monday.

“Jordon James is an electric player, kind of what Damien Thigpen brought to that position,” Neuheisel said. “He is certainly a weapon.”

The one area that Neuheisel said needs improvement is blocking.

“We’re taking baby steps there,” Neuheisel said. “But we haven’t really explored that with him. He will have to do that if he is going to play that position. That’s a big shoulder pad job.”

James said the blocking is “easier than being at running back. You just have to stop block. It’s not a big issue.”

Orloff surgery

Freshman linebacker Mike Orloff will undergo surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. There is also some concern about his anterior cruciate ligament, which Neuheisel said is “loose.”

“We hoped that he could play, but the swelling is such that he will get surgery,” Neuheisel said. “We are going to try to get him 100% by spring ball.”

 Quick hits

--Safety Tevin McDonald sat out practice with an ankle injury. Cornerback Jamie Graham sat out with a knee injury.

--Tight end Joseph Fauria, wide receiver Jerry Johnson, linebacker Jared Koster and strong safety Dietrich Riley missed practice with “food poisoning or the flu,” Neuheisel said.

--Pasadena Muir High cornerback Kevon Seymour was at practice. Seymour is the nationally ninth-ranked cornerback by Rivals.com.

--Neuheisel said the Bruins would go through a 20-25-play scrimmage in Monday’s afternoon practice, “just to get a taste.”
